In the following article, two different grammars of ancient languages are discussed, the “Cambridge Grammar of Classical Greek” and Volume 1 of the “Oxford Latin Syntax”. First, their intentions and concepts are compared, then two sections of the case syntax and tense theory are analysed in more detail. Though both main authors come from the same Classical Department at the University of Amsterdam, as well as from the sphere of influence of the Functional Grammar of S. C. Dik (along with some other common grounds, such as the variety of examples and use of Dik’s Functional Grammar), there are some significant differences between both grammatical systems deriving from the kind of corpus, the type of grammar, and in particular, the order of the material in the syntax of the simple clause. The “Cambridge Grammar of Classical Greek” is designed more like a so-called ‘categorical morphosyntax’, whereas the “Oxford Latin Syntax” is, consistently, organised as a functional syntax. Such a syntax is still a desideratum in Ancient Greek.
